Wright can tell a good story and this 3rd in the Beauvisage series is no exception, but this one had some improbable plot developments that seemed a bit contrived and that kept me from rating it higher. (I am sparing you details as it would give away the plot.) The story's ok and if you're reading the series you probably won't want to skip this one but I don't think it's the best of the series. (I loved SILVER STORM.)

This is the story of Nicholai Beauvisage, younger brother to Alexandre (both of whom we met in CAROLINE). Set in 1793, Nicholai returns to America from his family's estate in France after escaping death during the French Revolution. He lost a woman he loved in the chaos that was the Revolution and now is looking to get back into Philadelphia life with his family. Beautiful and independent, Lisette Hahn, an Austrian immigrant, runs the Hahn CoffeeHouse in Philadelphia, the new capitol. The CoffeeHouse is a meeting place for figures like Thomas Jefferson. Lisette is proud she is able to run the CoffeeHouse alone now that her father is sick but she doesn't know how long that can continue. She just wants an escape and it seems Nicholai is willing to provide one. Just as it looks like something is developing between them, Nicolai gets some news that will take him to London.

Wright does a good job creating wonderful characters and the host of those from prior books in the series return for appearances, which weaves the books together. I do recommend reading them in order. As always, Nicholai is charming, but at times Lisette, who is otherwise a strong independent young woman, seemed to make unwise (even bizarre) decisions and was even a shrew for a brief period. I can't say I was fond of that kind of action on the part of the heroine.

Should you want to read more, here is the list of books in the Beauvisage series:

    CAROLINE (1977)
    TOUCH THE SUN (1978)
    SPRING FIRES (1983)
    NATALYA (1991)

If you like reading a series in time order, as I do, here are the books in Wright's intertwined Raveneau and Beauvisage series in chronological order:

    1780 - SILVER STORM
    1783 - CAROLINE
    1789 - TOUCH THE SUN
    1793 - SPRING FIRES
    1814 - SURRENDER THE STARS
    1814 - NATALYA
1818 - SILVER SEA (originally BARBADOS)
TEMPEST (to be released in 2012)

This book is the third in the Beauvisage series. Each new novel includes charcters introduced in the previous ones. Cynthia Wright is a great writer and keeps your interest from beginning to end. Set during the America Revolution time period, she really brings history to life. Descriptions are incrediebly accurate and you can get a sense of what it would have been like to live during that time period. She has made me laugh and cry within the same book and her stories just pulls you in and begs you to finish.I am sure the next book I read will be the fourth one in this series.

Spring Fires is the first book I have read in what I now see is a large interconnected group of series. I love books in which characters from other books play prominent roles, and that is the case here. Spring Fires is a stand-alone novel with engaging characters, richly drawn settings and a HEA, plus the pleasure of knowing that this isn't the last we'll see of the characters. That said, I would strongly recommend starting with the first novel for a much richer experience reading the subsequent ones.

The story of Lisette and Nicholai set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, is one of loss and broken hearts. Each has vowed never to give their heart to another after the disappointment and heartbreak of their last loves. However, their first meeting is like pouring gasoline on a fire and only continues to burn away anything and anyone in their path to HEA. The story moves through Philadelphia, it's coffeehouses to mansions, on to London and finally to France. Can't wait to read more of their story in future books. In this book it was fun to read more of Jean-Phillipe and Antonia (Nicholai's parents), Alec and Caroline, Lion and Megan, as well as Andrea and Devon - from the Raveneau family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spring Fires (The Beauvisage Novels bk 3) by Cynthia Wright.

Didn't realise when I started that there are 10 books which follow 3 families through 400 years.... starting with The St. Briac Novels, followed by The Beauvisage family then The Raveneau family who are the Sea Fairers. Each family plays their part in each family history through out the time span . I loved that, and felt as if I was part of the family with all the ups and downs. All of these books are well researched (locations, manners of the times etc).... and so well written, that you feel you are actually there, smell the smells and see the sights. I adored all the characters, locations and adventures. Truly worth reading.
