- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025I liked the history of the story and the way MS Wright's descriptions of the characters along with the story line kept me riveted in my chair. I could not put the book down as it was a great read and I felt that I was part of the story as each chapter drew me in even more. I think any adult of any age group would enjoy the adventure. I gave it a five star rating and cannot wait to read Book 2 in The Raveneau Family Series!
By the way, I am a 77 year old woman who has enjoyed thousands of books of all genres. This was a good adventure - love story with a little history and mystery.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2014Having read the reviews, I expected a hero who would brood and abuse his way through the book, a heroine who would keep exploding like a faulty gun at the drop of a hat, and general sea sickness. I was pleasantly surprised that inspite of the heroine being a spitfire with a decided lack of good sense of judgement, I liked her. And the hero being a cad at times didn't put me off the book. I was so captured by the story that when Devon was making another error in judgement( and she is a pro at that), I wanted to box her ears, and when Andre was being really callous and unfeeling, I wanted to shake him and console Devon! You can actually see Devon growing up in front of your eyes...from a carefree girl with silly notions to a woman who knows that sometimes even love is not enough, particularly when it's seemingly one sided. And Andre has such lovely sarcasm that you sometimes pity Devon, who is usually at it's receiving end. Not that Devon is any less...for a destitute, she knows no humility or even much sense. I laughed and laughed when she nearly gets married, all because she can't admit to being wrong! And Andre enjoys himself so much at her expense, and yet you can't hate him because you are smiling so much! Neither is perfect, nor is there any attempt at hiding their flaws. Andre is too suspicious of women, too used to being totally in charge, too experienced to value the worth of innocence. Devon is too full of pride, too used to doing her own thing, too foolish to know whom to trust. And yet you can't but feel for her when Andre seemingly abandons her and she grows up into a responsible woman. It's her fortitude and patience in the face of conspiracies, and her eventual sacrifice for a little girl that makes you fall in love with her. She is still full of fire and adventure, but for the first time you see her selfless side, where she loves without restraint or pride. Andre's commitment is sudden, and it's like an about face for him. I wished for a little more details about him missing Devon. And the ending was a bit too happy for my liking, like a kiddie story where nobody dies. But the voyage itself was wonderful.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2025Absolutely fabulous book.
Wonderful characters.
Very interesting location for this Virginia girl.
Story flow was terrific and I loved that the story continued to a natural end and didn't leave you wondering about what happened next. Although I will be reading the next in the series, anxious to hear more about Devon and Raveneau.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2012Weird title for a review, huh? I actually re-read this when I realized that I hadn't written a review yet. This was the first of Cynthia Wright's romance novels that I had read. I then read Caroline and then Touch the Sun. Of the three, Touch the Sun is my favorite so far.
Now back to explaining my "weird" title. I was really into the heroine, Devon, at the beginning of the book. She is very young, around 13, I think, and has a typical crush on the hero, Andre Raveneau (a sea captain of a privateer) who is of course a gorgeous hunk of a man that she bumps into down at the docks one day. She is intelligent, loves to read and loves the idea of the adventure of sailing on the sea. It's just her and her bitter mother during the Revolutionary War....her father, who was also a sea captain, was killed along with her older brother at sea. She has a childhood friend, Morgan, who she does everything with. Now we jump ahead 5 years...Devon is now a beautiful young woman of 18 and still has a crush on Mr. Raveneau. Morgan, her childhood friend, is in love with her (also "desires" her) but Devon does not reciprocate those feelings. When visiting a family friend, she has an encounter with her crush, Andre Raveneau.....who escorts her home and gives her a very memorable kiss in the carriage. I am still liking her....she has behaved up to this point in a way I could relate to and could sympathize with. Then a year passes and two British soldiers enter the shop and Devon's world is turned upside down. She ends up as a stowaway on Raveneau's ship....by way of one of Andre's sailor's named Caleb (who is charming to Devon but is really a scoundrel). And it is at this point of the story that my sympathy and feelings for Devon change. She turns into a whiny, annoyingly naive and shrew of a heroine. We fall into the typical back and forth between the hero and the heroine....but it wasn't done with charm (like the H/h in Touch the Sun). I was left wondering why these two fall for each other.
Mrs. Wright definitely has very strong alpha males for heroes. Andre has some moments where he's a bit of a jerk...but considering his "history", Devon's immaturity, and his sexy charm....I can forgive him. I believe he has moments that he redeems himself. The entire story was just ok for me...it's not the greatest love story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025I read her series Crowns and Kilts first, which I truly enjoyed. But now, I’m completely distracted by the punctuation. There are WAY TOO MANY exclamation points. Everyone seems to be “exclaiming” everything they say—it’s too much! Way too much! And distracting from the true emotion between the characters!
Further, the hero is way too disrespectful of Devon that it borders on Andrew Tate behavior—at least the acts/attitudes he’s confessed to engaging. Parts of this story are a real turn off.
My guess is this was one of her original novels and she learned to improve. The later series—Crowns and Kilts—was much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommend
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has everything I look for-romance, betrayal, mystery, suspense, intrigue, historical information woven into the plot. Held my interest from beginning to end. No gratuitous filler. I kept reading to find out what was going to happen, but I didn’t want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE PERFECT READ!
This is the first time a book has made me laugh and cry at the same time. I have never really felt an interest towards historical romanves but after reading this book, I'd be lying to myself if I said that I fell in love with this. I feel like reading it over and over again. It is a perfect blend of romance, passion and a dose of comedy. After this, I am so buying all of the author's books.
Keep up the good work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just awesome!
This was the first book i read written by Cynthia Wright.
I totally fell in love with the 2 main characters and as soon as i had started reading, i did not want to put the book back down. Throughout the book i enjoyed how the relationship between Andre and Devon started and progressed. Their fights, shoutings, stubborness but also tenderness, love and drive for adventure made the book super entertaining. I also loved the style the book was written in. The way the characters talked and the use of the french language was very appealing to me and i wished i could have been in Devons role :-) Another great aspect are the words chosen to describe the scences and people in the book thus i was able to form great pictures in my head and felt as being a part of the book myself.
I already purchased the other 3 books of this volume and cant wait to be part of the upcoming adventures of the Reveneau family.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ogni amore è a suo modo una tempesta...
Leggere in lingua originale è ancora per me un po' impegnativo, ma, comunque, questo romance mi è piaciuto perché corrisponde alle aspettative create dalla cover... peccato che come spesso accade sia solo il primo di una saga...
